Dog and Cat Policy
CALS ACUC Policy on Dogs and cats on CALS agricultural stations, farms, and animal facilities. Adopted 14 July 2003.
Per UWS 18.06(5)i, the presence of dogs or cats is prohibited on CALS agricultural stations, farms, and land unless they are on leash under control of and accompanied by a person or are suitably restrained or contained. Dogs are not allowed in CALS animal facilities without prior written approval of the chancellor or his designee.ii This prohibition includes “working dogs” unless prior written approval is obtained. Cats owned by the university may be used for rodent control under veterinary supervision and care and are exempted from the restraint requirement. All dogs and cats allowed under this policy must be current with appropriate vaccinations.

5) ANIMALS. The presence of dogs, cats, and other pets is prohibited in all university buildings and in arboretums at all times except as authorized by the chief administrative officer. Dogs specially trained or being specially trained to lead blind or deaf persons or to provide support for mobility-impaired persons, and wearing harnesses or leashes and special capes, shall be exempt from these provisions. The presence of dogs, cats and other pets shall be prohibited on all other university lands unless they are on leash under the control of and accompanied by a person. Any dog, cat or other pet found in violation of this subsection may be impounded and its owner subject to the penalty provisions in s. UWS 18.07.
ii The Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, as designee of the Chancellor, further delegates the approval authority to the CALS Animal Care and Use Committee.
