Caring for Animals in Research Employee Scholarship (CARES)

This scholarship supports UW-Madison unit employees involved in the care of animals used for research, teaching, and outreach activities by providing funds to pay for the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification exam.

These employees are the front line of defense in assuring that the University's research animals are healthy and well cared for, which in turn provides the healthiest research models and the highest-quality research results possible. AALAS, a nationally recognized organization, offers professional certifications that can advance these employees in their careers. The cost of the exams can be an obstacle for some of those employed in these positions. This scholarship allows these employees ready access to this advanced training. Certification increases the professionalism of our research animal care staff, inspires loyalty to the campus, contributes to the research efforts of our scientists, and, most importantly, benefits the animals under our collective care.

To Apply for the Scholarship:

1. Complete the CARES application.
2. Attach your AALAS examination registration and submit in person or via mail to Lauralee Wheeler, attention Associate Director Rick Lane, at Room 396 Enzyme Institute (RARC main office).

Tax-deductible gifts can be made directly to the CARES fund via the UW Foundation by check, online, and in other ways. To donate online (credit card):

1. Visit the Make a Gift Online link at the University of Wisconsin Foundation website.
2. On the form choose Graduate School, enter the amount you want to give, and in the memo text box type in "CARES fund" or "fund 12446392". If this is not specified, your gift will go into a general purpose fund and not to the CARES fund specifically.
3. Enter the requested personal information on the next screen, and credit card information on the next.
4. Verify your entries on the final screen and submit it.

To donate via monthly or quarterly Electronic Funds Transfer:

1. Visit the Printable Forms link at the University of Wisconsin Foundation website
2. Print either the monthly or quarterly ETF form, complete it, and return it to:

To donate by check:

1. Make checks payable to "University of Wisconsin Foundation" and in the memo field reference the "CARES Fund" (or fund #12446392). If this is not specified, your gift will go into a general purpose fund and not to the CARES fund specifically.
