Ordering Extended Release formulas of Buprenorphine

Note: You do not need to amend your DEA and SUA registrations if you switch from Buprenorphine to Buprenorphine Extended Release (ER) formulas. You may need to update the amount in milligrams requested for the year, due to the differences in concentrations and shortened expiration dates.

Ethiqa XR (1.3 mg/ml) is the RARC recommended product. It is FDA-indexed, meaning it is recognized as pharmaceutical grade by the FDA over compounded products. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals specifies that pharmaceutical grade compounds should be used when available. This product can be ordered from veterinary supply companies, such as Midwest Veterinary Supply, with account set-up and DEA/SUA documentation. This product expires 90 days after first puncture (first use).

Buprenorphine ER (Buprenorphine Base ER Lab Extended Release Polymer Injection [a ZooPharm formula]), manufactured by Wedgewood Pharmacy, is a sustained release analgesic that provides extended pain relief to laboratory animals.  Wedgewood is now able to fill research orders directly from the researcher.

Buprenorphine Base ER Lab Extended Release Polymer Injection (a ZooPharm formula) is available in two concentrations: 0.5 mg/ml (mice) and 1.0 mg/ml (rats). Both are available in 5.0 ml bottles.

Expiration: Current FDA regulations assign this drug an expiration date of 28 days after first puncture (first use). Unused product must not be used after 28 days.
