The Research Animal Resources and Compliance (RARC) office has launched a dedicated informational webpage to help the UW–Madison research community prepare for the upcoming AAALAC International site visit in Fall 2026. To maintain our accreditation, AAALAC International will conduct a comprehensive review of our facilities, policies, and animal care practices.
This year’s site visit will focus on the following units:
- School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH)
- School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM)
- Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR)
Currently, SMPH, SVM, OVCR, and CALS (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison are accredited by AAALAC International. AAALAC International is a nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs.
This visit is an important opportunity to showcase the strength of UW’s research community and our shared commitment to the highest standards of animal care and science.
What to Expect During the Visit
The AAALAC Site Visit Includes:
- Facility Inspections - This includes all animal vivaria, as well as lab managed animal housing and procedure spaces across the UW–Madison campus.
- Program Review - Site visitors will receive program documentation in advance, including information about our animal care and use policies, protocols, and other required materials.
- Conversations with Our Research Community - Site visitors will meet with you—investigators, lab staff, and animal care personnel—to learn how our animal care and use program functions in practice. They are genuinely interested in understanding how research is conducted day to day.
