Top 10 Tips to Prepare for the AAALAC Site Visit
- Review your protocol
Ensure your protocol accurately reflects your current research activities. Need guidance? Use the self guided protocol evaluation tool. - Check expiration dates
Dispose of any expired drugs, solutions, sutures, or other consumable materials used with animals. - Label secondary containers
Verify that all secondary containers are clearly labeled with both their contents and expiration dates. - Verify cage card accuracy
Cage cards should be complete, current, and easy to read. - Audit your records
Review surgical and post procedure monitoring records for completeness and accuracy. When analgesics are used, documentation must include the date, time, and dose. - Keep procedure areas tidy
Animal use spaces should be clean, organized, and free of clutter. - Know your emergency plan
Be familiar with your lab’s emergency and contingency procedures. These plans should be reviewed with all lab members at least annually. - Stay safety smart
Confirm you are up to date on PPE requirements, medical clearances, hazard signages, etc. - Know what to do if you find a sick animal
Make sure you and your team understand what actions to take—and who to contact—if you observe a sick or injured animal. - Ask for help when you need it
